It seems like there is some kind of conspiracy against petite dresses for women. I mean, I know that since the early 1900’s people are 4 to 6 inches taller and live at least twenty years longer but that does not mean that there is no need for a petite dress every now and then – let’s get real here! There are still enough petite women who require petite clothing so where have all the petite dresses gone? Listen, if you are a tall woman or a plus size woman, then you have Lane Bryant who specializes in clothing for large women. But what about small women? I can’t think of one designer who is specializes in petite clothing. Well, I guess if you are a plus size short woman you could buy plus size petite dresses at Lane Bryant.
Actually, there are some fashion designers who offer a line of petite clothing. Donna Ricco, J Crew and Ann Klein have fashions for small women, and often come out with petite dress collections. Depending on the season, you can find an assortment of petite summer dresses or winter dresses. The great thing about designer clothing is that they will not offer petite clothing for women if they are going to look like a circus clown or a little girl playing dress-up. Many generic fashions simply resize junior dresses for smaller people and sometimes the effect is devastating. I have seen a petite dress with a barbie logo on the back once. I mean, don’t they even look at the design? Just as large women need different styles that flatter their figures, so to do petites usually need styles that suit their small stature.
Moreover, it is especially difficult to find petite dresses special occasion style. I pity the poor girl these days who is shopping for petite homecoming dresses. Try a search online for petite homecoming dresses just to see what pops up. Not a whole lot, I’ll bet you! Take heart girls, if you can’t find anything to fit you, there are always seamstresses around who can alter clothing so that it hangs correctly. Also, here again, high end designers do offer a line of petite dresses special occasion style that can be worn to homecoming.
Well, let’s try not to get out of hand though. I mean, sure, it is a really tough shopping world out there for us petites, but there is still hope. Even though the most common sizes run in juniors or misses, if you shop early each season when new styles hit the stores you should be able to assemble a wardrobe you can be proud of. Shop at stores like Macy’s, Dillard’s, Bloomingdale’s and other high end department stores. Trendy designers always offer a line of petite evening dresses. The real problem only occurs when you don’t want to spend a lot of money. Most moderate to low price clothing deals with common sizes. The best advice I can give you if you are not looking to spend a lot of money is to look for sales or shop online. Petite dresses and petite clothing in general are always available from the designers’ websites.
